New community-led initiative aims to expand breastfeeding support, improve access to culturally relevant resources, and build peer-to-peer networks for new and expecting mothers in Douglas County.
Doulas of Douglas County and the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition are proud to announce the launch of a community-wide initiative through the Douglas County One Big Idea Project. With funding from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, the project will host a kickoff meeting on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, to introduce the effort and invite local participation.
This initiative is designed to improve breastfeeding support and education across Douglas County, especially in underserved communities, by building a strong network of peer support, public awareness, and accessible resources. Key objectives of the One Big Idea Breastfeeding Project include:
Train Community Liaisons: Trusted individuals from diverse backgrounds will be identified and trained to provide culturally responsive peer support and information to new and expecting mothers in their communities.
Build a Culture of Support Through Events and Education: Regular coalition meetings, community gatherings, and informational sessions will be hosted to raise awareness and normalize breastfeeding as a healthy and supported practice.
Engage Local Leaders and Partners: The project will collaborate with healthcare providers, civic leaders, and family-serving organizations to ensure the effort reflects community priorities and strengthens existing support networks.
Enhance Digital and Print Resources: The existing Douglas County Breastfeeding Coalition website and resource guides will be updated to better connect families with local services, support groups, and culturally relevant breastfeeding information.
The July 1st Kickoff Meeting will serve as an open invitation for community members to learn more about the project, offer input, and explore how they can get involved—as liaisons, partners, or advocates for change.
